Recioto Classico della Valpolicella, Bignele - 2019

Item # 44356 500mL

The Bignele winery started in the early 1800s and have been experts on all things Valpolicella since the get-go. This is the specialty dessert wine of the areas, a Recioto that was made by first drying the grapes after harvest. Sweet on the palate but with tannins, dark fruits, spices. Rich and delicious and great partner with a cheese plate.

Staff Pick Notes

God bless the Italians. They understand the rhythm of a great dinner, and that towards the end, after numerous savory courses, what's welcome is a drop of something sweet. In northeastern Italy it's likely to be a recioto della Valpolicella, a velvety sweet wine made from dried grapes. This bottling from Le Bignele is an exceptional example. The winery has been in the Aldrighetti family since 1818 and they remain old-school in their winemaking. For their recioto the grapes are dried on wooden mats that they place in the family’s orchards for 3 months. After fermentation the wine is then aged in barrel for 3 years. It's plush and full bodied with lively acidity and layers of black cherry, blackberry jam, dried figs, clove, licorice, and chocolate. A fantastic alternative to port, sip alongside chocolate desserts or blue cheese.

The red Corvina grape (a.k.a. Corvina Veronese) is the most widely planted grape in Italy's Valpolicella and Bardolino regions. In recent years, it has gained momentum as the best grape for making Amarone.

This is a very large region that produces all sorts of red wines, often from the Corvina grape, that range from light, early-drinking, Beaujolais-esque efforts to hulking dried-grape monsters like Recioto and Amarone.
