Staff Pick Notes

I fell so completely head-over-heals for the Mullineux Family Syrah (item# 27223, which I highly recommend!) that I had to check out one of their white wines and I’m so glad I did. Their Old Vines White is a heady blend of 62% Chenin Blanc (from 40+ year old vines), 10% Clairette Blanche, 9% Viognier, 7% Grenache Blanc, 6% Semillon Gris (from 57-year-old vines, wow!), and 6% Verdelho that get fermented together in 500-litre barrels where they stay for eleven months of incredible harmonization. Pale straw in color, this wine has a nose of ripe, green citrus and succulent stone fruit aromas and hints of holiday spice. The palate is fresh and richly textured, with notes of ripe pears, almonds and peaches, and a long, subtly spiced finish. BYO bottle of this to your favorite Chinese place and pair with dry pepper style prawns and cumin beef.

Glossary

South Africa

South Africa is often lumped together, under some arbitrary umbrella heading, with the other wine-producing regions of the southern hemisphere - South America, Australia, New Zealand, etc. This does a severe injustice both to the fantastic wines of South Africa and to the wine consumer: the region is peerless in its harmonious synthesis of New and Old World winemaking styles. Wines lately coming out of South Africa - in particular, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and...

Clairette

Clairette is a term that is applied to several white varieties in southern France: "Clairette Ronde" refers to Ugni Blanc; there is also a pink-skinned variety called Clairette Rose. The real "Clairette Blanche," however, is a touchy grape that is added to many blends in the southern Rhône, Provence, and Languedoc. It is prized in such blends for its bright acidity and its aromatic properties.

Viognier

Some of the most intriguing wines associated with the white Viognier grape contain hardly any Viognier at all: in the Côte Rôtie appellation, wine must be made principally from the red Syrah grape, but up to 20 percent (often far less) can be of white Viognier. The practice of adding Viognier to Syrah began as a way of taming the very ripe, tannic reds of the hot Côte Rôtie ("roasted slope"), but it produced such incredible results that other countries, most notably Australia, have followed...

Chenin Blanc

A versatile grape that is grown worldwide, but is most commonly associated with the Loire, California, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. It produces just about any type of wine you can think of: ageworthy dessert wines; delicious, honeyed dry whites; sparklers; and even bases for fortified wines and spirits. These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
