Staff Pick Notes

Giuseppe Mazzocolin has been at the helm of Fattoria di Fèlsina for 3 decades. His wines are stellar examples of Chianti Classico, with complexity and ageability that often rival Brunello di Montalcino. 2006 proved to be a solid vintage in Tuscany, with a long and warm growing season. The wines demonstrate great balance between elegance and power. This Chianti is worthy of a leisurely meal that allows it to reveal what a decade of age can do for a wine. Out of the bottle it remains tense with tannin, but after a half hour the dark cherry fruit really sings. It paired wonderfully with classic Turkish dishes of grilled Adana lamb and Hünkar Begendi, a creamy smoked eggplant accompaniment.

Chianti

One of the famed wine-producing regions of Tuscany. Wines of Chianti can be made from any number of Sangiovese clones, and likewise the wines span a wide spectrum of flavor and aroma profiles. Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent complement to Cabernet Sauvignon in red Italian blends; this grape duo forms the basis of many of the...

Tuscany

When you think of Tuscan wine, think of Sangiovese, the grape that is common to most great Tuscan reds (Vernaccia is the only white wine made here). Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most complex expressions of Sangiovese, has the best aging potential. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows the softer side of the grape, containing up to 20% of other varieties. Young Chianti often smells of fresh fruit and herbs, while Chianti Classico Riserva can be dark and brooding. The term “Super Tuscans”...
