Karmazin is also known as Frankovka and Blaufränkisch elsewhere, but in Moravia it is a beloved local variety. Petr Koráb makes soulful and engaging wines, and this dy red with black cherry and plum aromas is fresh and vivacious, and medium-bodied. Pair with Vepro Knedlo Zelo.

Since abandoning his law career to take over his grandfather’s vineyard, Petr Korab has been driven by his passion for learning. The most important lesson learned is what experienced natural vignerons all know: great wine is made by good farming. Through the years, he has converted methods to organic then to biodynamic. Happy and healthy fruit allows the winemaking to be hands off and the wines to be full of life. His Karmazin (or Blaufränkisch), is his own favorite wine. It is dense, slightly viscous, and full of energy. It shows dark fruit, dried herbs, pine, beeswax, and earth. Open alongside lamb chops.

Glossary

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're some of the best things coming out of Austria these days.
