De Martino, Ungrafted Carmenère, Maipo - 2021

Item # 48767 750mL

Marco and Sebastián De Martino are fourth generation winemakers with a particular interest in their family's ungrafted, old vines. This Carmenère comes from the Santa Inés Vineyard in Maipo. Dry, with medium body and medium tannins, this fresh red has aromas of pulpy dark fruit with floral and herbaceous aromas. Pair with rabbit stew.

Staff Pick Notes

A fascinating boutique project started by brothers Marco and Sebastian De Martino, whose family has been crafting wines in Chile since 1934, Ungrafted is exactly what is sounds like. These are truly ungrafted vines with rootstocks original to the vine (not spliced like the vast majority of vineyards today), which many say carry through a deeper sense of terroir. Chile has several natural protections that allow these ungrafted vines to survive, where in America and Europe they would be destroyed by the insect pest known as phylloxera. Between a split in the Maipo River, there is a raised riverbed island where Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive, similar to the soils of left bank of Bordeaux. The sunny, dry days work wonders to bring about a complex and balanced red that has notes of plums, incense, pepper, and cocoa. Delicious!

It has recently found a home in Chile, where it has successfully been made into full-bodied, deep red varietals.
