Staff Pick Notes

I started working in the wine biz while living in Ithaca about 10 years ago and Bloomer Creek was one of my favorite wineries to visit. The tasting room had pretty limited hours then, but the owners Kim and Deb would usually be working. Kim could be a bit gruff (he didn't suffer fools gladly), but he humored my amateur curiosity with insightful details about his wine making practices. At the time I didn't really get this wine, but revisiting it after a decade with expanded wine horizons it has now become one of my favorite reds from the Finger Lakes. Full stem inclusion and two years in neutral oak draws the emphasis away from primary fruit towards lovely secondary savory notes (rose, dill, bay leaf) on the mid-palate. Stylistically it reminds me most of the more interesting Spatburgunders I've had from the Pfaltz.

No longer is our fair state synonymous with Concord grapes and Manischewitz; look for brilliant iterations of Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Franc,...

Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...
