Ghemme "Chioso dei Pomi," Rovellotti - 2016

750 mL
Item # 28823

The elegance of this Nebbiolo-based wine is apparent with its layers of lithe, dusty tannins. Complex, with knitted flavors of dark berries, tar, and dried rose petals. Decant alongside a feast of short ribs, lamb shanks, or oxtail in earthy, gamey sauces. A natural for wild trumpet mushrooms. The grapes for this cuvée are sourced from the “Chioso dei Pomi” vineyard in the heart of Ghemme. A Ghemme blend of 85% Nebbiolo and 15% Vespolina, this wine matured in large Slavonian barrels for over 12 months before bottling. The Rovellotti family traces its roots in Ghemme to the latter stages of the 15th Century.

Staff Pick Notes

There are few things better than an aged Nebbiolo, but there are also few things worse than gazing slack-jawed at an empty wallet after buying one. So if you want something close to an aged Barolo on a Barbera budget, look no further than Ghemme "Chioso dei Pomi," Rovellotti - 2016. Ghemme is a small town, but is gaining international recognition thanks to the work of Antenello Rovellotti, the winemaker who helped revive Ghemme’s ancient winemaking tradition in the 1980’s and was instrumental in it gaining DOCG status in the late 1990’s. Rovellotti’s “Chioso de Pomi,” made from made from 85% Nebbiolo and 15% Vespolina that spends 30 months in oak , typifies the region’s traditional style: aromas of dried cherry, crushed rose petal, leather, and tobacco give way to an earthy, rich palate. Pair with rustic food and a full(ish) wallet.

More About This Wine

Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...
