Rosso Piceno, Tenuta Santori - 2021

Item # 37025 750 mL

Rosso Piceno was the first recognized denomination in the Marches region in the late 1960s. When an area is less-known, it's a boon for you as you'll find wines off the beaten path like this delicious blend of Sangiovese (after all, we're not that far from Tuscany) and Montepulciano. The fruit is driven by dark berries, fern and capers.

Staff Pick Notes

If you're planning a wine trip to Le Marche, be prepared for a bumpy ride. To get to this region's vineyards you'll have to scale the towering mountains of the Apennines. But nestled in between are some verdant valleys, ideal for the grapes which grow there. Despite the high elevations surrounding it, the area beneath which makes this wine, called Rosso Piceno, enjoys an almost Mediterranean climate. Add the native limestone and calcareous soil and you end up with some beautifully rustic and balanced reds that are an easy match for all meats, from salumi to a grilled hanger steak. Sangiovese is the main component, lending bright red fruit and tannin, while the remainder made up of Montepulciano adds some darker fruits and a touch of spice.

Glossary

Marches

This region lies on Italy’s Adriatic Coast, so much of its cuisine is seafood-based. Marches is best-known for its white wines. Verdicchio produced near the towns of Jesi and Matelica often has gently bitter notes and rich fruit, and is an excellent match for many seafood dishes. Red wines are produced here as well, with Sangiovese being the dominant red grape in the region. When blended with the local Montepulciano, it makes a wine called Rosso Piceno (mostly sangiovese) or Rosso Conero...

Montepulciano

This rugged red staple can be anything from a simply fruited, easy-drinking wine to a serious, more structured offering, complete with all the depth and earthiness that can come from old-vine fruit and ideally placed vineyards. Montepulciano d'Abruzzi is produced in the region of Abruzzi from the Montepulciano grape, and is not to be confused with Tuscany’s Sangiovese-based Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Many of the modern incarnations of Abruzzi’s favorite red wine are bigger, more structured,...

Sangiovese

Italy's most planted grape variety is at the heart of some of the most beloved wines in the country. Grown all over the region, but especially in Central Italy, Sangiovese is the only grape allowed in Brunello di Montalcino, and the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, and countless other delicious Italian blends. Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent complement to Cabernet Sauvignon in red Italian blends; this grape duo forms the basis of many of the...
