Rosso Piceno was the first recognized denomination in the Marches region in the late 1960s. When an area is less-known, it's a boon for you as you'll find wines off the beaten path like this delicious blend of Sangiovese (after all, we're not that far from Tuscany) and Montepulciano. The fruit is driven by dark berries, fern and capers.

If you're planning a wine trip to Le Marche, be prepared for a bumpy ride. To get to this region's vineyards you'll have to scale the towering mountains of the Apennines. But nestled in between are some verdant valleys, ideal for the grapes which grow there. Despite the high elevations surrounding it, the area beneath which makes this wine, called Rosso Piceno, enjoys an almost Mediterranean climate. Add the native limestone and calcareous soil and you end up with some beautifully rustic and balanced reds that are an easy match for all meats, from salumi to a grilled hanger steak. Sangiovese is the main component, lending bright red fruit and tannin, while the remainder made up of Montepulciano adds some darker fruits and a touch of spice.

This region lies on Italy’s Adriatic Coast, so much of its cuisine is seafood-based. Marches is best-known for its white wines. Verdicchio produced near the towns of Jesi and Matelica often has gently bitter notes and rich fruit, and is an excellent match for many seafood dishes.
