Tasting Notes

One of the great producers of the Valpolicella Classico area, Tommaso Bussola, owes much of his success due to rare old vines from ancient clones. This is a showy red wine with a lot of personality and robust fruit.

Staff Pick Notes

This wine shows character—it has a spicy aroma and you’ll find black fruits like prune, black raisin, fig, and clove on the palate. The term "classico" means that the wine is made from grapes grown in the heartland of the region. The term "superiore" means that, by law, the wine has to have an higher alcohol percentage than the average. The grapes are picked late in order to have more concentration of sugar and, consequently, more alcohol. Finally the term "ripasso" (in Italian, “re-do it”) means that in addition to the grapes mentioned above, leftover grape skins from the production of the bigger brother, Amarone, are used. The result is that you have more sugar to ferment and, ultimately, more texture and flavor. Great wine, I love it!

Astor's Glossary of Terms

The red Corvina grape (a.k.a. Corvina Veronese) is the most widely planted grape in Italy's Valpolicella and Bardolino regions. In recent years, it has gained momentum as the best grape for making Amarone.

This is a very large region that produces all sorts of red wines, often from the Corvina grape, that range from light, early-drinking, Beaujolais-esque efforts to hulking dried-grape monsters like Recioto and Amarone.
