Staff Pick Notes

A fantastic bottle of Tempranillo with no gimmicks. Familia Conesa's estate 'Pago Guijoso' in Albacete is within greater La Mancha (Conesa also makes Manchego cheeses on the estate). La Mancha is the largest wine region in Spain, and in fact all of Europe. It's an extremely arid climate with constant sun. During Moorish times it was known as 'Al-Mansa' meaning parched earth. With such consistent heat grapes ripen easily, and the annual challenge is knowing when to pick. But in the right family's hands emerge stellar wines, and the treasures are there if you seek them out. This wine is definitely a find. It has an intense savory air and is surprisingly light on its feet. Notes of fragrant red berries with salt, dried herbs show off a distinct regional character. No question, an incredible every day wine.

Tempranillo is often used in blends with Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and has lately been grown with considerable success outside of Spain, in...
