Merlot "Ponka", Paraschos - 2016

Item # 41744 750mL

The Paraschos family became hooked on Friulian wines after tasting wines to the likes of Gravner and La Castellada. They endeavored to make wines in the same fashion starting with their purchase of a vineyard in the 1990s. This is a delicious red wine. Grapes are hand harvested, destemmed, and macerated in open topped wooden vats for 20 days. Hand punchdowns are performed about 4-5 times per day. The skins are pressed to stainless steel tanks for about 4 days at cellar temperature. Then the wine is racked, with the fine lees, to 2500 and 500-liter oak barrels for elevage. Bottled unfiltered.

Staff Pick Notes

Paraschos is a two generation family winery in the Collio region outside of Gorizia, a border town between Italy and Slovenia. It's an area with a lot of cross cultural pollination from cuisine to wine. This mixture along with the area's mineral rich "Ponka" soil - giving its wines a spectacular purity - make Collio a distinct region. This wine is entirely hand made with utmost care for the environment from organic vineyards. The final product is un-filtered which gives it an exceptionally earthy vibe. Aromas have a medicinal-like quality with dried fruits and leaves. The palette is rustic with notes of plums, figs, goji berries, even some pine tree sap. A fine example of Merlot grown in a cool climate region.

Glossary

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Famous for its fascinating and unusual white wines, this region is home to many avant-garde winemakers (such as Gravner and Vie di Romans) who have expanded their repertoire of winemaking styles to include both the most modern, stainless-steel and barrique-influenced wines, to über-traditional wines with long maceration periods, fermented in clay amphorae. The grape that benefits most from the latter of these unusual and ancient techniques is the white varietal, Ribola Gialla, which yields...

Merlot

The next time you hear someone say they never touch Merlot, tell them that it's too bad, because you were just about to open a few bottles of Château Pétrus and Le Pin, and you have no one to share them with. Some wine drinkers are quick to dismiss varieties that become too fashionable, but Merlot is popular for good reason. It has one of the most impressive and distinctive textures of any wine, and has long been prized for the "softening" effect it can have on Cabernet Sauvignon - especially...
