Dom. du Pélican, Cuvée Trois Cépages - 2021

Item # 44140 750mL

A Jura red blend of three grapes: Pinot Noir (60%), Trousseau and Poulsard. The vineyards are located in the village of Montigny-les-Arsures where the soils are a mixture grey and black marls at an elevation 300-400 meters. The wine was aged in Burgundy barrels (50%) and foudre. Domaine du Pelican is a relatively new endeavor started by Guillaume d'Angerville after mistaking a Jura wine blind as Burgundy. That initial captivation lead him to initially lease some vines and then scoring the ulitmate in land: the 4 hectares of vineyards from a just retired Jacques Puffeney.

Staff Pick Notes

The first non-Burgundy wine that fooled Guillaume d’Angerville when tasted blind was a Jura Chardonnay from Stéphane Tissot. This impacted Guillaume to such an extent that he began a quest in search of vineyards in the Jura. This was a big deal, since the d’Angerville name has its roots in Volnay, where Domaine Marquis d’Angerville began bottling their own Burgundy wines in the 1920s (much to the dismay of the négociants)! The hunt was on for vineyards that had either never been touched by chemicals, or that were being farmed biodynamically. Pinot Noir, Trousseau, & Poulsard come together here in harmony, creating an elegant yet intense blend that is as pure as the Jurassic blue and gray marl soils they grow on. Vibrant red fruits, hints of forest floor, floral tones, and a pristine minerality combine for a truly exciting experience!

Glossary

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Jura

A petite and relatively obscure wine region in eastern France, between Burgundy and the Swiss border. Its geographical isolation has helped it to remain a rare bastion of traditional winemaking techniques, and today it produces some of the most distinctive wines in the world. Reds from the Jura are often light-bodied, earthy, berried, and reminiscent of the village wines of Burgundy (though here they are made of local grapes like Poulsard and Trousseau). The true specialty of the region,...
