Spanish red wines have a connotation as being bold, deeply colored, and tannic. While that certainly is true for the most popularly exported wines there is quite a variety, and some unique outliers. "Ciclón" from Vinas Serranas is certainly not what you'd expect from the sun-drenched, arid landscape outside of Salamanca. It's made of the obscure Rufete grape, which grows in Castilla y Leon and northern Portugal. It's a dark-skinned, late-ripening grape that is seldom used in mono-varietal wines. The "Ciclón" is light-medium bodied with flavors of dried herbs and raspberries, moderate tannins, and good acidity. It has a savory quality that recalls good, classic Chianti. In short, this food wine is a breath of fresh air! Pair with young Iberico cheese, cecina, and black olives.
